Keyhole keeps topping itself, and this weeks 4 new pages are no exception. Up now!
A longbox full of distro items
Posted: June 7, 2011 Filed under: News Leave a commentHey, DOMINO just added a ton of new distro items to our store!
Swell by Juliacks. 100+ page fully silk screened comic book. $50
One of DOMINOS favorite comics of all time, SWELL was completed over the course of 4 years. Originally serialized as a minicomic, SWELL is now collected as a fully silk screened book. Only 110 copies—and DOMINO has only a few to sell.
The cover is a lithograph, made by JULIACKS hereself—in fact, the entire book was hand printed by the artist. Truly a one of a kind work of art.
SWELL tells the story of Emmeline Grouse and her family in the midst of grief for Lucy, the sister and daughter of the family who has recently died.
This is a rich, heartfelt, incredibly strong work of art that DOMINO is incredibly proud to get to distribute.
Goodbye and Wedding Day by Clara Bessijelle. $5
Two beautifully drawn stories—Goodbye and Wedding Day—together in one elegant digest package.
Last Night I Finally Got Contact with Someone by Clara Bessijelle. $4
New Yorker style gag cartoons drawn with care and strange humor by Clara Bessijelle.
Brief Travel by Anthony Meloro. $8
Very personal and evocative imagery from Meloro–this accordion book is basically an abstract travelogue. Very unique and worth your time. Screenprinted by the artist.
16 page digest size mini with a lot of short, slice of life stories. Drawn with a great cartoony and off the cuff style. There used to be so many wonderful ‘personal’ zines like this, and now I see less and less. This is a strong one from someone with a different voice from most comics makers.
This is a Xeric winner from Godek with a really minimal/sharp as a tack drawing approach. The book itself is lovingly produced: accordion folded, strong paper, pleasing proportions. Godek describes it as ‘perhaps the longest gag strip ever.’ But it’s much more than that. Here’s more from Godek: “! follows a handful of disparate characters, navigating their way through a day filled with trials and triumphs, expectation and disappointment. It’s a love story (or several), or an adventure or a vengeful morality play. It all depends on how you look at it.”
DARK TOMATO at Copacetic
Posted: June 6, 2011 Filed under: News Leave a commentHey, the great Copacetic Comics in Pittsburgh has Dark Tomato #1 in stock. Bill Boichel (or as JULIACKS calls him, ‘the guru’) has this to say about the book:
“Twenty pages of trippy evocations of New York City life – specifically riding on the subway and dealing with the MTA – by a long time comics maker that we’re going to go out on a limb and guess that most people reading this have never heard of (although we have had a handful of her self-published works on sale here at Copacetic, as a part of one or more of our SPX hauls). Sakura brings an adventurous artistic spirit to comics in Dark Tomato, and we recommend it to any and all adventurous readers. The paper, production and printing (in Estonia!) impeccable, but, with the exception of the cover, is in black and white. “
Bill knows a ton about comics and loves them the same way we here at DOMINO do. So, if you’re in or near Pittsburgh, head to Copacetic now!
2 New Stories
Posted: June 2, 2011 Filed under: News Leave a commentNew 8 page story Here I Am! by Austin English, up now. I am very proud of this one. It will be in a book within a year, but enjoy it on the web for now.
Also up today is a 4 page installment of Keyhole by Jesse McManus—this bit kicks off chapter 2. Adjust your browsers!
Jockum Nordström & Marcel Dzama at Galleri Magnus Karlsson
Posted: May 27, 2011 Filed under: News Leave a commentAttention Stockholomers, there’s a great show up now at Galleri Magnus Karlsson. New work by Jockum Nordström & Marcel Dzama, both solo and collaborative. Up until June 26th. One of the best shows I’ve seen in Stockholm. Well worth your time.
DRAWN IN out now

Drawn In, a new book of artist sketchbooks edited by the great Julia Rothman is available for orders now. Julia was nice enough to include some of my sketchbooks in it—I just got a copy of the book and it looks so good. Anders Nilsen, Vanessa Davis (she did the intro) and other favorite artists of mine are in the book so it’s a real thrill.
If you don’t feel like ordering it from Amazon (and I know where you’re coming from on that), it should be in all kinds of bookstores (including the big ones and the small ones) in about a week. Here’s an ample preview to tide you over.
Edie Fake on Dark Tomato
Posted: May 25, 2011 Filed under: News Leave a comment
The one and only Edie Fake, whose new book Gaylord Phoenix is winning hearts all over the place, has written some really nice words about Dark Tomato over at the QUIMBYS site:
“SM makes some of the most weird, beautiful and innovative comics I’ve ever seen. Dark Tomato, about some strange events in the life of one of New York’s finest subway drivers, slips through a dream reality and hangs out in a teacup. Prince Tamlin Tomato, with the love fuel of her dear Grandmother, interprets the signs and navigates the funky funnels of the MTA tunnels with narrative motion that folds in on itself only to expand unexpectedly. Maku’s vibrant, boney, wire-haired characters look like amazing teenage fan art for the Rolling Stones collaged with scraps from the best fabric store ever. They move through patterned space with a fluid float that builds language the from scratch both linguistically and graphically. The debut title from Austin English’s new publishing project Domino Books, this comic is a real power.” -EF
Fake is a cartoonist working with ordering and maintaining the zines and mini-comics at QUIMBYS, the same job I used to have over at Forbidden Planet. I admire the hell out of what Fake does at Quimbys—the personally written reviews of zines is really special to me. It’s an intersection of working hard at a business while bringing your own concerns and personality to it that I find really beautiful. That kind of attitude has a lot to do with why I started DOMINO.
Keyhole and JULIACKS update
Posted: May 24, 2011 Filed under: News Leave a comment
Keyhole, by Jesse McManus, pushes ahead—this week with a staggering four page installment.
I’m one day late posting Keyhole this week, as I took a day trip Helsiniki with JULIACKS and some other great artists. JULIACKS has just finished SWELL and INVISIBLE FORCES and will be touring around Europe this summer with her art. I found both books (and the film) to be really beautiful and will be writing about them here soon. If you’re in Europe, try to catch JULIACKS—-her website will have updates.
Sweetheart #4 Back in Stock
Posted: May 20, 2011 Filed under: News Leave a commentOne of the mini comics that I’m most proud of, Sweetheart #4, is back in stock. Go get it in the store now. I’ll soon have Sweethearts #1 and #2 reprinted as well—and then, who knows—maybe some Tenth Frames? There were 12 issues of that total. I’m missing a few at this point—anyone have a complete set?
McManus, Mattotti, More
Posted: May 16, 2011 Filed under: News Leave a comment
First things first: 2 new pages of KEYHOLE by Jesse McManus are up. Its getting pretty wild—phenomenal drawing as always.
Second, I reviewed Lorenzo Mattotti’s STIGMATA over at THE COMICS JOURNAL. I read Stigmata on a week when I was wrestling with my love for comics (it’s a constant back and forth for me). The book is a real work of art and, at least for now, made me want to continue with comics more than ever. Hope that comes through in the review.
Lastly, I sent out DARK TOMATO #1 orders to Forbidden Planet New York, Quimbys, and Copacetic this morning! If you live near those stores, please support them. If you live in Portland, Dark Tomato is already on the racks of the worlds best comic store, Floating World.
